Is it all four wheels, just the front, just the back, does it need drums and/or rotors? It could be a reasonable price, or a scam for your money. Learn how to do it yourself, save hundreds! How much does it cost to get your breaks changed?
Well it would depend on where you called, if you called a VW dealer then it will cost you more then going to a Pep boys or Firestone. It would also depend on what type of brake parts you car needs, and the estimate could have included pads rotors and calipers, if your not clear on what is needed to be changed or even if you don't know they will give you a quote of changing everything. I would recommend taking it to a garage and have them inspect your brakes. If you live near a Pep boys you could search the net for a coupon for a free brake inspection. If not the inspection is $10-15 and if you allow them to repair they take that charge off. good luck
If u do it ur self its cheaper, but take it to a local shop it should be 100 pads and if you want rotors
Well book time on that job is 2.3 for the front (r%26amp;r pads and rotor) and the same for the back. So its 4.6 hour job. realistically its about a 2.5 hour job total, r%26amp;r pads, rotors, bleed system. There are some people that will just do a pad slap (no grease on slide pins, wont even touch the rotors, maybe tighten all the bolts up, maybe. And they will tell you its a 50 dollar job. But brakes carry a liability, insurance costs more if you do brakes, also a high return rate for things like squeaks that are not really anything but you have to waste time inspecting. If its $300 parts and labor your getting a good deal. Check craigslist if you want a better deal, you can get people there to do it for like $50-$75 labor per axle.
