How do you change a broken spoke on the back wheel near the cassette?

I have a few broken spokes on my back wheel, next to where the cassette is. My guess is I have to remove the cassette to gain access to the spoke ends so that I can replace them.

How do open the cassette? Is there any tricks involved? How do you change a broken spoke on the back wheel near the cassette?
Shimano sells a tool to connect to the splines of the smallest sprocket. You will also need a ';chain whip'; toll to hold the other sprockets of the freewheel. I have used a short section of chain connected to a vice grip/ Set the chain links on the sprockets and hold the vice grip to keep the sprockets from turning while you unthread the smallest cog. The sprockets.cluster may then be removed. How do you change a broken spoke on the back wheel near the cassette?
Chances are - those spokes didn't just break.

Time and time again I see where some one comes in with the broken spokes and then I find that the chain has cut the spokes because the Hanger is bent or the Mech. is improperly adjusted.

If a spoke is worn out, it will break at the very end of the ';J'; bend, on the hub flange and leave no head to be found. If you end up with two pieces of spoke, then it was cut by some mechanical means.

Whatever the case - figure out what caused it to begin with and repair accordingly.

The Above answer is right on the money!
