What is wrong with my car?

When I press on my breaks it sounds like I am driving on my rims. also the o/d off light comes on and off randomly while driving it.

My dad says that I need to get my breaks changed but I was wondering how much that might cost. What is wrong with my car?
Sounds like metal on metal? Your brake pads are shot. If you can do it yourself you can go to Autozone, buy new pads and rotors and install them yourself in about 2-3 hours if you haven't done it before and have someone to teach you. After the second or third time, you'll be able to do both sides in an hour. The pads and rotors will still cost you less than having a mechanic replace the pads and machine the rotors. The problem is if the mechanic inspects your brakes and you need new rotors, by law, the shop cannot let you drive your car from the shop until it is fixed. Then you're stuck paying whatever they charge you. It will cost a pretty penny regardless because shops have to make a profit to operate and they can pretty much charge a lot because you definitely need this done. Sorry for the bad news, but at least it's not your engine. The O/D light flickering on could be you transmission going bad or you may need a transmission service done on your Protege. The Mazda Protege is a very reliable car so make sure to keep up on the maintenance and you'll be happy for many years to come. What is wrong with my car?
the noise is the brakes worn down terribly.should be about 35 a pair.
i own a shop, and more than likely its going to cost around 3-400 bucks to get it done right,if all it needs is brakes, they,ll check it out real good, and let you know if it needs anything else on it,good luck with it.
you probably need brakes and maybe get your rotors turned if not new ones. It should be about 40-60 for front brake pads and turning rotors is about 20 per one. Autozone does it but you have to take it apart yourself. Just always ask to see the old parts they are replacing to make sure they arent screwing you. As far as the o/d light, i have no idea

IF YOU PAY 300-400 YOU AER GETTING SCREWED!!!!
Yes Its you brakes , I don,t think I would take it to the dealer It will coast about 800.00 Dollars for the dealer to change brakes, Check around first, Or maybe Dad could do it Its easy for some , Hope this helps
Sounds like your brake pads have worn down to metal to metal.

(possibility hub bearing) will cause the o/d to go out... but the shop should be able to verify the engine codes..
if it sound like your riding on your rims you might need new rotors and new pads you should have gotten it checked sooner
well brakes pads rotors drums and if you lived out here i could fix it becasue now i am an ASE CERT MECHANIC IN 5/8 your looking at up to 900 bucks for brakes and with the od light the torque converter is going bad not giving it that gearing gain it needs sorry thats going to cost possibly up to 2k

MOVE TO WISCONISIN TOO MANY MECHANICS NOT ENOUGH JOBS
First, Breaks. If your car has been making this noise for a while, you will need break pads and most likely break rotors. The rotors are the expensive part, probably $150 each (need 2 if it is only the front or rear, 4 if both front and rear).

Second may or may not be a problem. Your o/d (overdrive) light is for your transmission. You want your o/d ON for best gas mileage. The o/d off light is telling you that you are not getting the best mileage. The switch should be on your gear shifter. The light may come on when you are driving fast, like on the highway telling you to turn the o/d on for better mileage. Check your owners manual to be sure.
Probably past saving. Gonna probably cost you at least $300
if the o/d off light flashes while you are driving, then it is telling you that there is something going on with your traqnsmission. the o/d light flashing if about the same thing as a check engine light .... just telling you there's something wrong that needs to be fixed.
