How often are you supose to change your breaks?

How much on an average to they charge to change your break at a shop including labor? Or to do them yourself how much do the breaks cost only? My sister has a friend that knows how to change breaks, I want to know the price difference so I can see how much I can/would save? I don't know a thing about cars. I have a 2002 Ford Focus. How often are you supose to change your breaks?
Midas, Firestone, %26amp; Sears, well most national chains run monthly specials that they will do brakes for $69 per axle. This is of course a come-on, because they then charge you $20 each to turn your rotors. So you could have a national chain do your brakes for roughly $100 per axle.

The front pads cost $25 from autozone for your car, so you would save $45 at least if your rotors are not needing turned, and your sisters friend doesn't charge you. Good Luck. How often are you supose to change your breaks?
You should check your brakes around every 30 to 40 thousand miles, the amount of wear depends on how much you use them. You could save around 200 dollars if you changed your own brake pads but if you don't know anything about cars I wouldn't recommend you start learning by changing brake pads. You could endanger your life if you made a mistake.

1. You've asked this before. Once is enough.

2. It's spelled brakes.
instead of taking it to the garage, i would just get the brakes and have your sisters friend put them on, they dont cost that much and by having him to do it for you, you will save a heap of money. i change my own brakes and they stop just as well as if the garage did it.
