i have a 1991 honda civic and ive never had to change breaks before so i was hoping someone could tell meHow do i change my brakes?
Changing brakes is not a good place to start learning mechanics. If you have a friend that knows, ask them to show you how. Otherwise, take it to a repair shop and see if they will let you watch. How do i change my brakes?
Its really not that hard if you kind of know what you are doing but Im no expert either although I have done it. Remove the bottom caliper bolt. Loosen the top bolt alittle and the whole caliper will swing up and out of the way(i use a peice of wire and hook it to the spring to keep it out of the way)Now you can remove the pads and install new. Force the caliper piston flush with the caliper frame using a large c-clamp.Now the new pads will slide over the rotor.
Changing brakes is a very easy job. You need very few tools and a c-clamp. My borther and I did our first brake job when we were 15 and were shocked how easy it is.
Tip only do one side at a time - leave the other side together so you can look at it if you cant put things back together.
Look at AutoZone's website. They have on line manuals. Or go to the library to get one for your car. Also when I owned my civic there was an honda forum that has the official honda manuals online. I forget the name of it.
Serously there is nothing that can go wrong doing brakes. Take off the tire. Remove two bolts that hold the caliper on. Open the brake resivoir. Push the piston back ino the caliper with the C clamp. Put in the new pads like the old ones came out. Put the caliper back on. Put in two bolts. Put on the tire.
Just that fast.
Note don't let the front caliper hang by the rubber hose. You don't want to break the line. Tie it up with some string or wire. Also if you brake the rubber line then you need to replace it and bleed the brakes. This is the subject for another post.
Do it? What;s the worse that can happen. Nothing. Go check out AutoZone and read up on it.
I just checked the autozone website.... the istructions say to bleed the system as a final step.. You don't need to do that unless you remove the caliper.
I would just go to just brakes for $99.00 I wouldn't let anyone touch my brakes. Simple reason, if something goes wrong you would be at fault since you improperly installed them. e.g. no recovery in court. Assuming you survive.
